The Functional Strength challenge

Test your strength Saturday June 14th, 10:30am

Deadlift, push up, carry, snatch

  • Event 1: Trap Bar Deadlift

Participants will have 3 attempts to lift the heaviest weight they can from the ground to the lockout position for one repetition.

    Rules:

Participants will tell the judge the weight they want for their first attempt before the event begins (during warm up) so flights can be organized. When their name is called, the participant will have 1 minute to begin their attempt. The judge will hold their hand up indicating the participant can start the lift. The bar cannot move down once it has begun to move up. A call of down will be given by the judge once the lockout position has been achieved (shoulders, hips, knees and ankles stacked on top of each other with the bar in hand). The participant can then return the bar to the ground. They may not drop the bar out of their hands, but there is no other speed requirement going down.

    Divisions:

This event is the same for all divisions.

  • Event 2: Push-ups

Participants will perform as many push-ups as possible in 1 continuous set.

    Rules:

Participants will start in the lockout position, elbows straight, and descend until they touch the bar or floor (depending on division) with their upper chest. They will push themselves back into the lockout position where the judge will then count the rep. If they miss either top or bottom position, a command of “no rep” will be given.

    Divisions:

Women’s Standard: from a barbell, positioned at hole X on the rack

Women’s Advanced: from a barbell, positioned at hole V on the rack

Men’s Standard: from a barbell, positioned at hole X on the rack

    Men’s Advanced: from the ground

  • Event 3: Double Kettlebell Rack Carry

Participants will carry two kettlebells of the same weight in the rack position for as long as possible.

    Rules:

The rack position for this event is defined by these landmarks with the kettlebells in your hands:

    1) Thumbs touching either slightly above, on, or slightly below the collarbone

    2) Kettlebells touching the forearm and front of the shoulder (NOT resting on top of the shoulders)

    3) The inside of the upper arm touching the torso

    4) Elbows NOT resting on the pelvis or from of the torso

    5) Fingers NOT interlaced with each other

Once the kettlebells are secured in the rack position, either by getting them there or having them placed there by another person, the timer will begin and continue as long as the participant is moving. There is no distance requirement or speed requirement for the walking, participants simply must keep moving. The timer will stop when the kettlebells are taken out of the rack position, or if the particIpant stops walking for more than 3 seconds.

    Divisions:

    Women’s Standard: 2 x 12 kg kettlebells

    Women’s Advanced: 2 x 16 kg kettlebells

    Men’s Standard: 2 x 18 kg kettlebells

    Men’s Advanced: 2 x 22 kg kettlebells

  • Event 4: 3-Minute Snatch Sprint

Participants will have 3 minutes to perform as many kettlebell snatches as possible.

    Rules

The kettlebell must pass between the legs with the handle above the knee at the “bottom” of every rep. It must make a single, fluid movement to the overhead lockout position (wrist, elbow, shoulder tacked on top of each other). Participants can set down the kettlebell, or switch hands as many times as they like, but the clock keeps rolling. Reps will be counted at the top position. If the participant fails to meet the standard on any rep, a call of “no rep” will be made by their counter. That rep will not count towards their total number of completed repositions. Total completed reps at the end of 3 minutes will make up your score for this event.

    Divisions:

    Women’s Standard: 10 kg kettlebell

    Women’s Advanced: 14 kg kettlebell

    Men’s Standard: 16 kg kettlebell

    Men’s Advanced: 20 kg kettlebell
